A Village Child Care was created by Mrs. Kambraia Dixon in December of 2011. Mrs. Kambraia started off as a youth & young adult leader at a local church. She became a nanny for several families, then a Behavior Interventionist in several LA county schools for children with special needs. After obtaining her Bachelors of Science degree in Interpersonal Communications from CSULB she obtained her Masters in Marriage Child and Family Therapy and went on to become a child therapist for children. For years she performed mental health evaluations, diagnosed mental health disorders and provided therapy to children, making sure to provide them with recommendations/referrals based on observed and expressed needs.
In 2016, Mrs. Kambraia decided to solely dedicate herself, knowledge and experience to the children at AVCC and children in her community. Most of the children enrolled have been enrolled and actively attending for over 5 years. Seeing the children grow up together and become an extended family has been extremly rewarding. Providing a safe, fun, educational, nourishing place for children to thrive continues to her priority.
Lee Dixon III (the gentle giant) joined our Village in 2015 when he moved from Kansas City Missouri to Long Beach. He is a father of two boys Devin & Zion. Mr. Lee and Mrs. Kambraia got married in 2019. Lee is well known in the neighborhood, always smiling and talking to people. He is an athlete, he played college basketball, was a youth track & field coach, and a manager at a parks & recreation facility. He plans, organizes, implements and supervises a wide variety of recreation related activities. Oversees the daily and long-term operations of Recreational Facilities. Lee manages staff, program implementation, facility maintenance and operations. Mr. Lee also completed culinary school and is a certified Culinary Chef! The kids love his ! He is a mentor, academic advocate, and a kind fun soul loved by many.
The phrase “it takes a village to raise a child” originates from an African proverb and conveys the message that it takes many people (“a village”) to provide a safe, healthy environment for children, where children are given the security they need to develop and flourish, and to be able to realize their hopes and dreams. This requires an environment where children's voices are taken seriously and where multiple people (the “villagers”) including parents, siblings, extended family members, neighbors, teachers, professionals, community members and policy makers, care for a child. All these ‘villagers' may provide direct care to the children and/or support the parent in looking after their children.
